The dragon blood tree is the sight most travellers remember from Socotra, but it deserves more than a quick roadside stop. The tree belongs to the highlands, where cloud, stone and open sky shape the way you see it.
Diksam Plateau and Firmihin Forest
The Diksam Plateau is the native highland home of the dragon blood tree. Firmihin Forest is the route's main concentration, with umbrella-shaped crowns rising across the ridge and overlapping into a rare forest silhouette.
The current eight-day route places this landscape around the middle of the journey, so the highlands are not compressed into a rushed arrival or departure day.
Homhil adds a second highland setting
Homhil Protected Area combines cliffside pools, layered rock terraces and highland vegetation. Dragon blood trees appear within a broader mix of endemic trees and open views rather than as a single forest stop.
This is one reason the eastern and central highlands should both stay in the itinerary: the same species reads differently in each landscape.
Give the forest time
Dragon blood trees are most evocative when the light moves across the plateau. A group itinerary provides a proper highland stay; the photography expedition gives more room for dawn, dusk and night.
Stay on established tracks with your guide and leave the trees and soil undisturbed. The experience is stronger when the landscape remains intact for the next traveller.
